Climate Response
Climate change poses a fundamental threat to the world, natural resources, species, and livelihoods. India is particularly vulnerable to this and is likely to have varied impacts owing to its geographic diversity, stronger dependence on agriculture, and increasing exploitation of natural resources coupled with population growth and socio-economic challenges. Major efforts are required to develop low-carbon and climate-resilient lifestyles. Climate adaptation and mitigation at regional, national, and global level are crucial for a long-term response to climate change. TARA is working towards influencing climate policy to be future ready.
Flagship Projects
Adaptation Fund Network- German Watch
TARA is lending support to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of India to enhance access to adaptation finance. Through the project we also aim to ensure the effective engagement of civil society not only at fund level, but also at the local level, throughout project planning and implementation. The project is supported by the Adaptation Fund Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) NGO Network- German Watch in which TARA is leading regional hub partner of South Asia. As part of the project two capacity building modules have been developed for CSOs on “How Civil Society Organizations can engage and access funding from the Adaptation Fund”. The course seeks to provide CSOs with a better understanding of the AF, its related processes in their countries and the variety of opportunities for engagement at national and international levels. The course is based on successful experiences in engaging with the Adaptation Fund of existing core members.
Green Recovery Dialogues
International Institute for Environment and Development supported TARA on a project which aimed to assess Green Budget of Bihar through the lens of holistic economic recovery, human health and ecosystem recovery. It also aimed to initiate multi stakeholder dialogues series with relevant stakeholders from local, national and global levels which provided a platform to showcase examples of green recovery solutions that are being successfully deployed at different geographic scales. The assessment of the Green Budget of Bihar was made on investments in green infrastructure, waste management, tax levied on environmentally harmful goods and services, green skill development, incentivizing green enterprises and research and development for greening.
Climate Change Communications and Outreach through Community Radio
This project was supported by the Azim Premji University and aimed to upscale, enhance and strengthen the knowledge of community stakeholders and radio reporters on climate change communications and climate change resilient agricultural practices. It also aimed to enhance the capacity of community radio reporters to develop and disseminate content on climate change resilient farming practices through online media platforms and other outreach tools. The project was implemented in the 5 districts of Greater Bundelkhand (Niwari, Lalitpur, Ashoknagar, Vidisha and Kanpur Dehat) and impacted 8.5 lack people and nearly 700 villages have been reached out and their concerns regarding farming practices during draughts, heatstroke have been addressed through radio programmes including Radio Bundelkhand, Chanderi ki Awaaz, Waqt ki Awaaz, Lalit Lokvani and Kisan Vani. Today, 15% of Bundelkhand’s farmers are engaged in adaptive activities related to climate change such as irrigation with sprinkled methods, low water seeds, usage of organic manure, kitchen garden promotion etc. Few farmers have changed their agricultural techniques by adopting traditional farming practices and producing vegetables with organic manure, allowing them to become more climate resilient.
