TARA and Swiss government sign LC3 agreement in Nepal

Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA) signed an agreement on 17 August 2023 with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs acting through the Embassy of Switzerland in Nepal for Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) feasibility studies in Nepal. TARA was represented by Dr Soumen Maity, chief technology officer and Dr Debojyoti Basuroy, senior manager and business lead. The Embassy of Switzerland in Nepal was led by Matthias Meier, head of cooperation and Antonia Elena Fluck, programme manager.

A collaboration of global institutes and IITs has found that Limestone Calcined Clay Cement, or LC3, is a sustainable alternative that cuts CO2 emissions by 40% and is significantly cheaper to produce.

A green cement with a promise to keep

This is not a pipe dream to reduce the environmental impact of construction, but a concrete solution — literally. Since the late 1990s a cement alternative is being developed and experimented with in India. A substitute that is economical, requires less energy to produce, uses waste material, is more environment friendly, and equals in strength with the existing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and Pozzolana Portland cement (PPC).
